Questlove stopped by today’s episode of The View, where he got candid about his reaction to the shooting of Ralph Yarl, the 16-year-old who was shot twice by Andrew D. Lester when he knocked on the wrong door in Kansas City.
The Roots musician and Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon mainstay told the Hot Topics panel about his own experience in his youth that took place when he was Yarl’s age.
Whoopi Goldberg pointed out that Questlove had posted on social media about Yarl — who is expected to make a full recovery after the shooting — and prompted him to share more about his reaction to the case.
“That triggered me instantly,” Questlove said, before revealing a story of his own scarring experience that took place when he was a teen.
“I’ve never shared this story in public,” he began. “When I was 16 I was in a situation in which me and three friends were coming home from a youth church thing and instantly we got pulled over, but we’d just never been in that situation before. You’re never in your right mind, and you’re shaking and everything.”
He continued, “Guns are drawn. They accused us of stealing the car. It triggered us so much, and I feel like, I felt bad because I’m wondering about Ralph’s— the after-effects of this. For me, I didn’t get my license until like, my mid-30s. I had a fear of driving.”
Questlove said his friends would even tease him for what car he drove since he preferred to keep a low profile on the road.
“I had in my mind that I’ll never get pulled over if I drive a clown car,” he said.
After hearing his story, Goldberg suggested Questlove connect with Yarl personally, telling her guest, “I’m going to put something crazy out into the ether. Maybe you reach out to him and let him know that life does get better and goes on.”
She added, “If anybody can make that touch, it’s you.”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
