LAS VEGAS — Since he broke into the NBA two seasons ago, Quentin Grimes has developed in a most rare fashion: linear.

As a rookie, Grimes earned a spot on the Knicks’ roster, then worked himself into the rotation.

In his second season, he earned a starting role and played nearly 30 minutes a night on a playoff team. What next? “I think just making a big jump,” Grimes said following Team USA’s practice on Friday at UNLV.

“My offensive game and my defensive game. Just being an all-around player, taking it to the next level.

“My shot, being a lot more consistent, driving the ball, making plays for myself and my teammates. And defensively, just taking that challenge of guarding the best player every night. I think just owning that and taking it upon myself to be more determined, really.”

The last part, in particular, would be music to Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau’s ears.

Grimes is getting a head start on guarding some of the NBA’s best this week as part of the USA Select Team, whose role is to practice and scrimmage against the team that will travel to the Philippines later this month to begin play in the World Cup. Grimes also could be called up in the event of injury.

“It’s a great opportunity anytime you get a chance to put USA across your chest just to go out there and compete,” Grimes said. “The senior team goes out there and get them ready with FIBA coming up.”

After the Knicks added Donte DiVincenzo as their only major signing of the offseason, Grimes could be asked to prove himself again at training camp.

He and DiVincenzo both primarily play on the wing, and though Grimes started 66 games last season, there is no guarantee he’ll retain that role this time around.

Even if he does, DiVincenzo figures to cut into his minutes. Grimes sounded far more excited about the addition of DiVincenzo than worried about his playing time when the question was put to him Friday.

“It’s good to add another shooter on the court, a lot more spacing for sure,” he said. “It’ll open up other plays for us to go out there and just make plays. Having somebody who can shoot the ball and space the floor can open up a lot of things for a lot of us on the team.”

So there is no concern?

“Nah,” he said. “I think everything you do is competition. You wanna have the best players out there every day to make us better. Competing against him, Josh [Hart], Jalen [Brunson], [Immanuel Quickley] is gonna make everybody better, really.”
