A 24-year-old transgender democratic socialist announced her bid to unseat a Queens assemblyman accused of sexual abuse and become Albany’s first non-binary lawmaker.
Émilia Decaudin, who is a member of New York’s Democratic Committee, said Tuesday she would run against Assemblymember Juan Ardila, who has resisted calls from party leaders to resign over accusations of sexual misconduct.
If Ardila finishes his term, Decaudin would not face off against him at the ballot box until next year’s primary election.
The self-described “socialist organizer” and “transgender rights advocate” said in a press release she would work to make Assembly District 37 — which spans from Long Island City to Ridgewood — more “affordable “and “inclusive.”
“New York cannot be the sanctuary it claims to be if people can’t afford to live here,” Decaudin said.
“Whether you’re a fourth-generation Woodsider, an asylum seeker, or a teenager escaping anti-trans laws in Florida, we need a New York that is affordable and sustainable for working people and that’s what I am fighting for.”
Decaudin first became involved with politics while volunteering for Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign at the age of 16.
Two years later, the teen was elected as the youngest-ever member of the New York State Democratic Committee representing part of Westchester County, the former stomping ground of progressive Queens ally Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
In 2019 Decaudin came out as a transgender woman — a first for a state party official, according to her campaign.
She then led an effort to allow non-binary individuals to run for Democratic slots that had been designated for men or women.
Decaudin currently is a party leader in the district she’s looking to represent — a diverse swath of Queens marked by working class neighborhoods, immigrant communities, and transient young professionals priced out of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Ardila, who was elected in November, has been accused of forcibly touching two women at a party in 2015.
The freshman lawmaker claimed the interactions with the women were consensual after hiring his own lawyers to investigate the accusation.
He has ignored calls for his resignation from both legislators in his own party and Gov. Hochul alike.
