Purdue basketball star Trey Kaufman-Renn said that his 13-year-old brother was subjected to racist language Friday night by the home crowd at Illinois.

The profanity allegedly came from the “Orange Krush” student section that is synonymous with providing one of the Big Ten’s biggest home-court advantages.

But the conference was left apologizing for antics that crossed a line in Illinois’ win,

“I was informed after the game by my mom and my girlfriend that there were some racist comments being said toward my brother, as well as my family being cussed out, stuff like that,” Kaufman-Renn said. “I just hope the security, especially at Illinois, can be better. I told them after the game that that’s something I would fight over. In no way am I saying anything about all Illinois fans but, unfortunately, the students that participated.”

Kaufman-Renn scored 29 points in an 88-80 loss.

Afterward, he revealed the situation without prompting from the media in his postgame news conference.

Illinois responded with a statement that suggested the vulgarity was a wider spread issue.

“Late in tonight’s game, Illinois staff was made aware of allegations of inappropriate comments made by members of the Orange Krush toward Purdue players, coaches and fans,” the statement read. “We received additional details after the game’s conclusion. We take such allegations seriously, and we will continue gathering information to determine appropriate action. In the meantime, we have been in touch with Purdue to apologize and express our disappointment.”

Kaufman-Renn said that he has not experienced anything to the “extent” of what was relayed to him during his three-year career at Purdue.

“The fact that my brother can be put in that situation is really unbelievable,” Kaufman-Renn said. “For a league like the Big Ten, they just need to be better about that.”

Both teams likely are headed to the NCAA Tournament but first could meet again on a neutral floor in the Big Ten Tournament.
