Several are speaking out after Jimmy Kimmel Live! was suspended from ABC after the host’s controversial comments regarding the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk. However, not everyone is lamenting the news.
Live was suspended indefinitely by ABC Sept. 17 after Jimmy Kimmel addressed Kirk’s murder during the previous broadcast. “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said on the show.
His comments earned immediate backlash after Trump’s Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr also called on licensed broadcasters to “push back” on Comcast and Disney, per Rolling Stone.
While many in Hollywood spoke out in support of Kimmel, who has yet to release a statement regarding the news, President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to gloat about Kimmel being pulled from ABC, noting that NBC should do the same to Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers.

“Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED,” he wrote. “Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!! President DJT”
Others condemned the decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live, claiming it violates Kimmel’s right to free speech.
Hacks star Jean Smart wrote, “I am horrified at the cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel Live. What Jimmy said was FREE speech, not hate speech. People seem to only want to protect free speech when it suits THEIR agenda. Though I didn’t agree at ALL with Charlie Kirk; his shooting death sickened me; and should have sickened any decent human being. What is happening to our country?”
Steve Martin also shared a passage from The Diary of Anne Frank on X, adding, “Our right to free speech is being eliminated.”
Others took aim at President Trump himself on social media. Wanda Sykes claimed Live was pulled “because of complaints from the Trump administration.”
“Let’s see. He didn’t end the Ukraine war or solve Gaza within his first week. But he did end freedom of speech within his first year. Hey, for those of you who pray, now’s the time to do it. Love you, Jimmy,” she said.
It remains to be seen if Jimmy Kimmel Live will ever return to ABC.
