NextImg:Postponed Mets game complicates David Stearns’ introduction

One of the collateral damage elements of the Mets and Marlins having their game suspended Thursday night with one out in the top of the ninth inning is that it could push back the introductory press conference for incoming Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns.

The Mets intention has been to have Steve Cohen officially name Stearns at a Citi Field press conference on Monday at noon.

MLB implores teams to not announce major business during the postseason as a way to not draw attention away from the showcase games.

The playoffs begin Tuesday, so the Mets’ plan for weeks has been to introduce Stearns as the head of baseball operations on Monday.

However, if the outcome of the game that began Thursday night has playoff implications, then the Marlins and Mets will regather to complete the contest at 1:10 pm on Monday.

The Mets had not yet officially gathered Friday morning to decide how to audible with a Stearns introductory press conference if they actually have to compete on the field.

It is almost certain that they would, at minimum, delay the press conference to later that day.

The Marlins took a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning before a three-hour, eight-minute rain delay followed by the decision to suspend the game.

The Marlins, without completion of the game, still were one-half game ahead of the Cubs for the third and final NL wild-card spot.

The Reds were 1 1/2 games behind the Marlins.

Miami was 1 1/2 games behind Arizona, who were in the second wild-card position.
