NextImg:Post-Tom Brady Buccaneers doubters in for ‘rude awakening’: Carlton Davis

Doubters of the Buccaneers, it’s time to wake up.

That is the message that Tampa Bay cornerback Carlton Davis had for people who believe the Bucs will take a major step back after Tom Brady’s retirement.

“We’re about to do it to ‘em,” Davis told GoLongTD.com. “Anybody who feels we’ve lost Tom — and lost something — is going to be in for a rude awakening. A rude awakening. Tom was a great addition for us, but obviously it’s a team sport. Obviously, you need components to be successful. We still have those components. And I’m only getting better.”

Davis’ proclamation also came with a promise — or a threat — for the rest of the NFL.

“We’re going to wreck s–t. Like, wreck s–t. Interceptions. Turnovers. Plays will be made. I will say. Plays. Will. Be. Made,” he said.

The sixth-year player played with Brady for three seasons, going to the playoffs in each — including a championship run during the 2020 NFL season.

Still, critics can point to the pre-Tom Brady seasons for their proof: in the three seasons before the QB came to Tampa, the franchise missed the postseason.

While the quarterback play will not be nearly as strong as it was — former No. 1-overall pick Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask are set to battle for the starting job — Davis believes that the squad has a chance to win it all.

At the very least, the Bucs can make some noise in the NFC East, which features several rebuilding teams.

“And our f—ing division is worse than what it was before,” Davis sad. “So, we run through the division. Get to the playoffs. Run through the playoffs and it’s the Super Bowl.”

The are plenty of reasons for fans to share in Davis’ optimism: the offense is headlined by Pro Bowl wideouts Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, and defensively it returns skilled players like Davis, who recorded 65 tackles and an interception in 2022 and recently signed a three-year, $45 million contract in March.
