Drew Maggi, the 33-year-old minor leaguer who was called up by the Pittsburgh Pirates, is being sent back down to Double-A ball.
Maggi, who had been called up previously but didn’t play, was brought to the majors once again last week.
The infielder made his MLB debut on April 26 against the Dodgers and recorded his first career hit on Saturday
Maggi, who played in 1,155 games after 13 seasons in the minors, will return to the Pirates’ Double-A team in Altoona.
The Pirates had optioned Maggi to the minors on Friday, calling up former Yankee outfielder Miguel Andujar for a game that was postponed due to rain.
Maggi remained on the Pirates roster for a Saturday doubleheader as the team’s 27th player, according to USA Today.
It was on Saturday night in Washington when Maggi recorded his first big league hit.
The infielder hit an RBI single to center field as the Pirates held a 12-0 lead on the Nationals in the top of the seventh inning.
“I saw it go right through the middle,” Maggi told reporters postgame. “It’s so vivid in my mind right now. I was just happy that I got it done and got that weight lifted off my shoulders.”
Maggi went 2-for-6 in his three-game run as a major leaguer, additionally recording a double, and he also scored as a baserunner in the Saturday game against the Nationals.
“Obviously, I never gave up, and I believed I could do this,” Maggi said. “But now that it’s happened, it solidified that belief. It was just a special week for me, and I’ll never forget it.”
