A freelance reporter from Philadelphia was gunned down in his home by an intruder Monday morning, two weeks after he claimed he was threatened by someone who called themselves “Lady Diabla, the She-Devil of the Streets.”

Josh Kruger, 39, collapsed in the street of his Point Breeze neighborhood after the killer entered his home at 1:30 a.m. and shot him multiple times at the base of the stairs, police said, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Kruger had staggered outside looking for help and was rushed to the hospital where he died less than an hour later, officials reportedly said.

There was no sign of forced entry and no motive was released for the slaying.

Kruger is the former communications director for the city’s Office of Homeless Services and recently published freelance articles and editorials about the city’s most vulnerable communities for outlets like the Inquirer.

“Either the door was open, or the offender knew how to get the door open,” Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore reportedly said. “We just don’t know yet.”

Two weeks ago, Kruger took to Facebook to complain about a mysterious threat from someone who called themselves “Lady Diabla, the She-Devil of the Streets.”

The person came to his house searching for their boyfriend “a man I’ve never met once in my entire life,” and threatened Kruger, according to the outlet. The post was not visible on Kruger’s profile Monday afternoon.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said he was “shocked and saddened” by Kruger’s death.

“Josh cared deeply about our city and its residents, which was evident both in his public service and in his writing,” Kenney wrote. “His intelligence, creativity, passion, and wit shone bright in everything that he did — and his light was dimmed much too soon.”

District Attorney Larry Krasner said in a statement that prosecutors were working with cops to find the person who killed Kruger. The DA also praised Kruger as a person who “lifted up the most vulnerable and stigmatized people in our communities — particularly unhoused people living with addiction.”

Krasner went on describe him as an “openly queer writer who wrote about his own journey surviving substance use disorder and homelessness” and “deserved to write the ending of his personal story.”

The Democrats’s LGTBQ+ Advisory Committee also released a statement mourning its “comrade who never stopped advocating for queer Philadelphians living on the margins of society.

“We are devastated that Josh’s life was ended so violently. We urge anyone who has information that could lead to an arrest and prosecution for Josh’s murder to contact the Philadelphia Police or the DA’s Office directly.”
