CHARLOTTE, N.C. — If you’ve ticked off Scottie Scheffler, that’s a pretty good indication you were in the wrong.
In the case of Thursday’s opening round of the PGA Championship Thursday at soggy Quail Hollow, the PGA of America was in the wrong for not permitting players to lift, clean and place the ball to avoid the countless number of mud balls they encountered.
The golf course took on some 5 inches of rain in the past week, with storms virtually washing out practice rounds Monday and Tuesday.
And yet Wednesday night, the eve of the opening round, the PGA of America, the tournament’s governing body, curiously released a statement that read: “We do not plan to play preferred lies. The playing surfaces are outstanding and are drying by the hour.”
