NextImg:Pete Alonso’s historic homers spark Mets’ win over Mariners to take series

There’s not much left for Mets’ fans to watch this season besides the attempt at a youth movement in the final month of the season.

Pete Alonso at least gave them a reason to show up on Sunday, as he hit two more homers and set some Mets history in the process, while also helping win a series over the first-place Mariners with a 6-3 victory at Citi Field.

Alonso’s two homers gave him 41 on the season and his four RBIs put him at 100.

Alonso became just the fifth player in MLB history to hit 40 home runs three times in his first five seasons in the majors and also became the fourth player in Mets history to top the 100-RBI milestone three times.

The Mets also got a home run from Jeff McNeil and more encouraging play from rookies Ronny Mauricio and Brett Baty, as they won for the third time in four games.

They knocked around right-hander George Kirby, who went to Rye HS in Westchester, for four runs in just three innings.

The Mets took the lead in the bottom of the first thanks to some brutal defense by Seattle.

Francisco Lindor reached on an error with one out when second baseman Josh Rojas booted a chopper and Lindor then scored on Alonso’s single to right-center that was played with a complete lack of urgency by star center fielder Julio Rodriguez.

Seattle had runners on first and second with one out in the second when DJ Stewart, in the middle of a fantastic stretch on both sides of the ball, made a terrific running catch of a Mike Ford drive to deep right-center and Tylor Megill got out of the inning unscathed.

Mauricio helped add a second run an inning later with a one-out single to center.

He then swiped second and scored on Francisco Alvarez’s single to left to make it 2-0.

They went up 4-0 in the third, when Alonso crushed his 40th home run of the season.

Megill faltered in the third.

After retiring the first two batters, Megill hit Eugenio Suarez and then allowed a two-run homer to Dominic Canzone.

Ford followed with a blast into the bullpen in right-center to cut the Mets’ lead to 4-3.

McNeil’s seventh home run made it 5-3 before Alonso went deep again.

Only Ralph Kiner, Ryan Howard, Albert Pujols and Eddie Matthews have topped 40 homers as many times in their first five years as Alonso and only Carlos Beltran, David Wright and Darryl Strawberry have as many 100-RBI seasons.

And since Alonso entered the league, only he, Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout of the Angels have multiple 40-homer seasons.

The first baseman’s 187 homers since 2019 are the most in the majors.

None of that, though, changes the fact that the Mets next head to Washington for a two-game series in an attempt to stay out of last place in the NL East.
