ST. LOUIS — If Pete Alonso’s words didn’t resonate loudly enough a night earlier, his actions on Saturday might have.
The Mets first baseman sent a bottle of 1942 tequila and signed bat with a personalized message to Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn after Alonso accidentally tossed the ball from the rookie’s first MLB hit into the stands on Friday.
The fan who caught the ball later gave it to the Cardinals, but Alonso was vilified by the crowd and booed for the rest of the night.
Alonso’s message on the bat conveyed that he was sorry and wished Winn success in his career.
“I just wanted to send him something because I didn’t want him to think about anything,” Alonso said before the Mets faced the Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Saturday night.
“It was a pure accident, a stupid thing, but I just wanted to send him something like, ‘Hey, I’m sorry for doing that. I wish you well and hope you have a great career.’”
Alonso said he threw the ball into the stands out of habit after umpire John Tumpane told him it would be removed from play following a throw in the dirt.
It wasn’t until Cardinals players began yelling at him from the dugout that Alonso realized he had erred.
Joey Lucchesi’s strong pitching performance Friday wasn’t enough to keep him in the major leagues.
The left-hander was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to give the Mets additional arms in the bullpen. The Mets recalled Vinny Nittoli and selected Adam Kolarek from Syracuse.
In addition, Dennis Santana was designated for assignment.
Lucchesi pitched 5 ²/₃ scoreless innings for the Mets in a spot start to give Kodai Senga extra rest.
But his arrival had left the Mets with only seven relievers.
“He came up and did the job and it leaves a good taste in everybody’s mouth,” manager Buck Showalter said. “If there becomes another need he will certainly be considered.”
Brandon Nimmo returned to center field after he played six games in left to help rest his sore left quadriceps.
Showalter said it’s possible Nimmo will play left field or DH on Sunday, which is expected to be extremely hot.
