Mets first baseman Pete Alonso answered two burning questions at the top of the list for fans of the franchise.
He was hosting his second annual Night of Comedy with Special Guests at The Paramount theater in Huntington on Monday night. There he addressed his injury and his long-term future with the Mets.
Alonso has been on the injured list since he was hit on the wrist in a game against the Atlanta Braves and is expected to stay there for 3-4 weeks. He was sporting a splint at the event on Long Island, but insisted it looked worse than it was.
“I feel great,” Alonso said in a video posted by The 7 Line’s Twitter account. “I know it looks bad with the splint, but I’m feeling excellent so I’m gonna get back out there as soon as possible. That’s the number one goal. I want to be out there ASAP.”
The first baseman’s 22 home runs and 49 RBIs lead the National League in each category this season. Alonso has slashed .231/.326/.546 in 261 plate appearances.
He and the Mets have yet to agree on a contract extension.
“They believed in me first and it’s really special,” Alonso said when ask if he would test free agency after the 2024 season. “I love New York and right now, New York is home. I can’t predict the future but right now I love where I’m at and [the fans] are phenomenal and it’s such a great place to play. It’s really special.”
Alonso and the Mets agreed to a one-year, $14.5 million contract this past offseason and his future with the ballclub came to the forefront after Jeff McNeil signed an extension over the winter. If a contract is not worked out, Alonso is heading for his third year of arbitration after this season.
The Night of Comedy with Special Guests was held the night before the Mets were scheduled to host the Yankees at Citi Field, which Alonso will miss. WFAN personalities Craig Carton and Evan Roberts served as hosts for the night and proceeds from the event went to the Alonso Foundation.
The Mets have dropped eight of their past nine games going into the Subway Series matchup. The two New York ballclubs will play a quick two-game set before going their separate ways until July when they meet again in The Bronx.
