The Disney+ television adaptation of Rick Riordan‘s hit novel series Percy Jackson and the Olympians follows the titular character as he discovers that he’s a demigod and is sent on a quest to return Zeus’s stolen thunderbolt to stop a war from breaking out among the gods.

The adventure series premiered Dec. 19, 2023 and aired weekly until Jan. 30.

Walker Scobell stars as Percy Jackson, with Aryan Simhadri as Percy’s close friend Grover Underwood and  Leah Sava Jeffries as fellow trainee Annabeth Chase.

Decider’s Joel Keller praised the show as a “straightforward quest story with good writing and well-defined characters.”

Episode 8, “The Prophecy Comes True,” picks up right where the previous episode left off and ties up a lot of loose strings.

What happens between Percy and Ares? Is Percy’s mom alive? Does Zeus get his thunderbolt back?  Continue reading for everything you need to know about Season 1 finale of this adventure series.

The episode opens with Percy mid-fight with Ares (Adam Copeland), who dubs them “enemies for life.” After exchanging some harsh words, Percy defeats the God of War and retrieves the Helm of Darkness, which he returns in exchange for the safety of his mother. However, Percy isn’t granted the immediate satisfaction and must wait for Hades to keep his end of the deal.

Percy reunites with Grover and Annabeth and tells them to return to camp to warn them of the impending danger while he returns Zeus’s thunderbolt. The young demigod is cautioned against doing so as they have ran out of time to complete their initial quest, but he decides to visit Zeus (Lance Reddick) anyway.

Percy gives Zeus the thunderbolt and says, “I didn’t steal it and neither did any of my friends.” Despite having his thunderbolt back, Zeus insists that the war among gods will continue. Zeus moves to strike Percy but Poseidon (Toby Stephens) arrives and protects him.

Some after, Poseidon transports Percy back to Camp Half-Blood where he is greeted with applause. Though, Percy is unnerved by the presence of Clarisse, who was rumored to have stolen the thunderbolt in the first place. Luke (Charlie Bushnell) and Annabeth insist that they haven’t told the camp about Clarisse (Dior Goodjohn) because they didn’t want to raise suspicion.

Later, during an intimate conversation, Luke reveals that he had stolen the thunderbolt and wants to recruit Percy to defeat the Gods, under Kronos’s guidance. Percy grows upset and the two get into a squabble which Annabeth breaks up.

The following day, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover go their separate ways while agreeing to meet up at the same time next year. Percy, back in his cabin, dreams that his mother is alive. His dream is interrupted by Kronos threatening him: “Your survival is the key to my return.”

Percy wakes up in his bed in New York City where his mom greets him for the first day of 7th grade. He says in a voiceover, “The stories you heard about Greek gods, heroes, and monsters, I’m here to tell you they’re real. If you ever feel like you don’t fit in, like the world doesn’t make sense, then you might be part of our world. So, don’t give up because we might need you for the fight ahead.”

Well, that was confusing. Was Kronos defeated? Seeming not. Is Percy’s mom alive? It looks like it! Did Zeus get his thunderbolt back? That’s a confident yes.
