


Tony-nominated actor Paxton Whitehead, who appeared in dozens of stage plays and guest-starred in dozens of TV series throughout his career, has died, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 85.
The actor, who was born in England, was nominated for a Tony Award in 1980 for his work on Broadway in Camelot, which he starred in opposite Richard Burton. Over the course of his stage career, he performed on and off-Broadway, with the Royal Shakespeare Company in England, and at regional theaters all over the world.
Whitehead may be most recognizable to many of us Must See TV-watchers for his recurring roles on Friends, where he played Mr. Waltham, Rachel’s boss at Bloomingdale’s (and Ross’s wife Emily’s uncle), and Mad About You, where he played neighbor Hal Conway.
He also appeared dozens of other sitcoms including Ellen, Frasier, 3rd Rock From The Sun, and Caroline in the City and in the syndicated series Marblehead Manor.

Whitehead also had memorable roles on film in 1986’s Back To School, opposite Rodney Dangerfield, and in Baby Boom, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, and Kate and Leopold.
When he wasn’t acting, Whitehead also a theater director, and spent several years as the artistic director at the Shaw Festival in Canada, a theater festival dedicated to the works of George Bernard Shaw.
Whitehead died June 16 at a hospital in Arlington, Virginia, his son told THR. He is survived by his son Charles and daughter Alex.
