The job of backup quarterback for the New England Patriots has been tossed around more than the quarterbacks do themselves.
The New England Patriots have signed Bengals backup quarterback Will Grier to their 53-man roster, according to multiple reports.
Grier’s signing comes after a dizzying offseason of quarterback transactions for New England.
At the end of the preseason, the Patriots surprisingly cut both backup quarterbacks, Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham.
For a brief time Mac Jones was the lone quarterback on the Patriots’ active roster.
The Patriots then signed 2022 third-round pick Matt Corral to the 53-man roster after the former Ole Miss star was released by the Panthers.
Shortly thereafter Corral landed himself on the exempt list for reasons that remain unclear, opening up a spot on the roster for Zappe.
The Patriots briefly added former Notre Dame standout and fourth-round pick Ian Book to the practicce squad before waiving Corral.
Reports cited that New England had intentions of bringing back Corral, but ultimately signed Grier.
Zappe will likely remain the No. 2 behind Jones.
Grier, now in his fifth season, has bounced around the NFL after starring in college at West Virginia.
The 28-year-old was drafted by the Panthers in 2019 as the 100th pick overall.
He appeared in two regular-season games with the Panthers in 2019, completing 28 of 52 passes for 228 yards and four interceptions.
After two seasons in Carolina he moved on to play with the Dallas Cowboys as third-string quarterback to Dak Prescott up until this preseason when he was deemed expendable after they traded for Trey Lance.
Grier was then signed to the Bengals practice squad and stayed in Cincinnati until the Patriots signed him to their 53-man roster.
has now been signed to the Patriots.
