Jack Jones’ future with the New England Patriots does not look bright.
The 25-year-old cornerback was arrested on Friday after allegedly trying to bring two loaded guns on a Los Angeles-bound flight at Boston’s Logan Airport and is now facing charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a large-capacity feeding device and possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card.
Jones pleaded not guilty during an arraignment on Tuesday at East Boston Municipal Court and posted $30,000 bail.
He has a probable cause hearing set for Aug. 18.
Jones could face over 30 years in prison if he was convicted and sentenced consecutively, a spokesman for the Suffolk County District Attorney told the Boston Globe.
The Patriots are reportedly “livid” about Jones’ arrest, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe.
“Putting himself in a position like this is at any time of year, but really like after breaking minicamp and all that stuff, it’s just… they’re livid,” Howe said on “Toucher and Rich” Tuesday morning.
New England selected Jones with a fourth-round pick in the 2022 draft, and the second-year cornerback, who played 13 games and made two interceptions last season, was expected to be an important member of the Patriots this year.
“All Mr. Jones wants to do is play football,” Rosemary C. Scapicchio, Jones’ lawyer, told reporters after the arraignment. “He doesn’t want to be a distraction at all.”
Scapicchio also said Jones “had no intention of bringing any guns onto an airport that day.”
It isn’t the first time that Jones has infuriated the Patriots.
He ended his rookie year on a team-based suspension after reportedly missing rehab sessions and disrespecting head coach Bill Belichick.
Jones is signed to a rookie-scale four-year contract that owes him $870,000 this season and $4.4 million total.
The Patriots have not yet made a public decision about Jones’ future on the team, only releasing a statement on Friday that said they were aware of the arrest and wanted to gather more information.
