Patrick Mahomes Sr. pleaded guilty to a felony charge of Driving While Intoxicated 3rd Or More in Smith County, Texas, on Tuesday, court records show.
The 54-year-old former MLB pitcher, who is the father of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, agreed to a sentence of five years’ probation with “intense” supervision for the first year, according to KLTV.
The elder Mahomes entered his guilty plea on the same day he was scheduled for a jury trial in Smith County.
Mahomes Sr.’s formal sentencing was scheduled for Sept. 23.
Other details about his plea deal were not disclosed.
Mahomes Sr.’s attorney, Joseph D. Murphy said his client is currently sober.
“Today, Mr. Mahomes entered a guilty plea in his case pursuant to a written plea agreement,” Murphy told NBC News.
“Our client is now living a sober life, and we believe that the steps he has taken to better his life helped us achieve a plea recommendation for probation.”
Mahomes Sr. was arrested for his third DWI after a traffic stop on Feb. 24 — just eight days before his son led the Chiefs to a victory over the 49ers in the Super Bowl in Las Vegas.
He allegedly had “a visible open container of an alcoholic beverage” in his vehicle and “admitted to having consumed alcoholic beverages,” per the incident report, obtained by Us Weekly.
Mahomes Sr. was also busted in June for driving with an invalid license in Tyler, Texas. He is scheduled to appear for a pre-trial hearing in regards to that charge on Oct. 15, according to KLTV.
Penalties for a third DWI include a $10,000 fine, two to 10 years in prison and loss of driver license up to two years, according to state law.
Earlier this month, Mahomes Sr. said he celebrated six months of sobriety, in an Instagram post in which he thanked his wife, Trisha, and family and friends.
He remarried after his divorce from Randi Mahomes in 2006. They share sons Patrick and Jackson Mahomes.
In 2018, Mahomes Sr. pleaded guilty to a second DWI charge and was sentenced to 40 days in jail, which he served on weekends in 2019 and 2020.
District Judge Kerry Russell said in court Tuesday that Mahomes Sr. was arrested in September 2008 in South Dakota, according to reports.
Mahomes Sr. pitched 11 MLB seasons from 1992-2003, including a stint with the New York Mets in 1999.
