NextImg:Patrick Mahomes’ NFL heroics come with love for ‘being the villain’

Patrick Mahomes has never played a road playoff game, but he sounds more than willing to embrace that chance if it comes.

In an interview with Nate Burleson that will air on CBS Mornings Monday, Mahomes said he prefers quieting the road crowd to firing up the denizens at Arrowhead Stadium.

“I like to be the villain a little bit,” the Chiefs quarterback said. “Obviously it’s cool at Arrowhead to be the hero and win the games and be able to host the AFC Championship trophy, but it’s just as fun, no offense to any of my division opponents, to go to their places and win those games. And so … both are great, but even though I have to smile, I like being the villain sometimes.”

Mahomes is promoting Netflix’s new documentary, “Quarterback,” which followed him, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota in 2022.

One of the clips that has already gained traction from the show is of Mahomes trash talking the Raiders’ Maxx Crosby, getting in the defensive lineman’s face after a Kansas City touchdown.

Mahomes has had the good fortune to never run into much trouble in the AFC West race.

Since he took over the starting job from Alex Smith in 2018, the Chiefs have never won fewer than 12 games and never lost the division.

The Raiders and Broncos have gone through rebuilding cycles with Justin Herbert and the Chargers falling short of Kansas City.

And, though he’s dealt with the disappointment of losing playoff games at home — most recently to the Bengals in 2022 — Mahomes has won a pair of championships and largely experienced smooth sailing in his NFL career.

That is in large part down to his own ability, but it is much easier to play the villain in a regular season road game than the playoffs.

Maybe Mahomes will get the chance to do so soon, but given Kansas City’s track record, it’s certainly possible the Chiefs are playing at home again in January.
