NextImg:Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid fined combined $150K for ref meltdown, criticisms

Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes attempted to walk back their respective criticisms of the officiating crew in the days following last week’s loss to the Bills, but that didn’t prevent the Chiefs’ high-profile coach and quarterback from being fined by the NFL.

The league slapped Reid with a $100,000 fine for publicly criticizing the refs and docked Mahomes $50K for “unsportsmanlike conduct for abusive, threatening or insulting language to officials,” according to the league website.

Mahomes had a late sideline meltdown after Kansas City receiver Kadarius Toney was called for lining up offsides late in the fourth quarter, negating what would have been a go-ahead touchdown run for the former Giant following a lateral pass from Travis Kelce.

“I know as fans you want to see the guys on the field decide the game,” Mahomes said after the game. “I mean, they’re human, they make mistakes, but it’s every week we’re talking about something and all I can do is go out there and give everything I have.

“I’m proud of the guys, that’s what we did and it was…another great football game that just ended like that. It’s just tough — tough to swallow.”

Reid also referred to the call on the play in question as “a bit embarrassing.”

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also addressed public criticism of the officials — especially the flag on Toney — during the league meetings earlier this week in Texas.

“I find it a little ironic when you say ‘attention on officiating’ when I think almost everybody, to my knowledge, is acknowledging that the officials were absolutely correct,” Goodell told reporters. “That’s their job to call when there’s a foul. There was no question about that foul. It was absolutely the right call.

“If you don’t call that, obviously we would’ve been subject or our officials would’ve been subject to criticism also.

“We all understand our officials are second-guessed. I’ve said it many times before, they are not perfect. No human being is. But the reality is they do an extraordinary job.”
