NextImg:Pat Riley doesn’t want to be ‘reckless’ trying to get Heat over NBA title hump

Pat Riley doesn’t seem to be feeling the heat to make an offseason splash after Miami’s NBA Finals loss.

With rumors swirling about the Heat looking to make major roster additions after losing to the Nuggets in the Finals, Riley quickly tried to put all the talk to bed.

“We’re not going to take a wrecking ball to this thing,” Riley, the team president, said during a press conference Tuesday.

“It’s just onward with this team.”

After Bradley Beal was shipped from the Wizards to the Suns, one of the top names connected to the Heat is Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard.

Jimmy Butler has even gone as far as to reportedly recruit Lillard to Miami.

Yahoo Sports also reported Tuesday that Portland is putting together a “compelling package” to offer the Heat for Bam Adebayo that could include the No. 3 pick in the draft along with a variety of other assets.

But Riley said Tuesday that he didn’t intend to break up the team’s core to try to get the Heat to the next step.

“Subtle moves will be enough if they’re the right moves,” Riley said. “I’m not just swinging for the fences right now because it could be reckless.”

The Heat have been in the Eastern Conference finals three of the last four years and in the NBA Finals two out of the last four.

And over this run, Miami’s core has largely stayed the same.

Butler has largely been the go-to player on the squad — both on the court and as a leader with Adebayo and guards Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson rounding out the core group that has made the team successful the last few seasons.

The team has done some retooling in recent years when it has fallen short, and part of that this past season came in the form of Kevin Love, who was a key contributor during the Heat’s run to the NBA Finals after getting picked up midseason.

If Riley is true to his words, Miami could end up with more moves like that — and less splashy ones — heading into the 2023-24 season.
