A collection of Wisconsin bar patrons learned the hard way that there is no such thing a sure winner in the NFL.
Jake’s American Pub in Milwaukee ran a much-ballyhooed promotion wherein every game that the Jets lose this season in which Aaron Rodgers was the starter results in their drink tabs getting comped.
Anyone who ever spent an evening in the state of Wisconsin knows this was quite the enticement, even on a school night.
Local CBS reporter A.J. Bayatpour attended what unfortunately appears to have been the only relevant night of the promotion on Monday, as Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles on his fourth snap that triggered an extremely premature ending to his highly-anticipated maiden season with Gang Green.
Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP who led Green Bay to victory in Super Bowl 45, was traded from the Packers to the Jets in April.
Bayatpour described “a loud roar” when Rodgers left the game with the injury in the first quarter, as the rules of the promotion did not stipulate that Rodgers had to finish the game.

Thinking the Jets would lose big-time without Rodgers on the field, bar patrons began racking up hefty tabs in anticipation of free booze, according to Bayatpour.
“I mean I’m not necessarily opposed to Rodgers but tonight I’m thinking with my wallet instead,” one customer told the local news outlet matter-of-factly.
Based on the gambling odds, the barflies had reason to run up the tab.
At one point the Bills were favored by two touchdowns in the live odds and the Jets’ odds of a comeback victory were longer than 10-1.
You know what happened next.
Eventually the segment panned to the crowd in the bar looking dejected after Jets rookie Xavier Gipson took a punt return to the house to cap off an improbable 22-16 comeback victory in overtime.

“It is setting in. They are going to have to go to the bar and pay that tab,” Bayatpour said.
The Action Network’s Darren Rovell spoke to Marcela Dougherty, a bartender at Jake’s, on Tuesday.
“A lot of people were surprised,” Dougherty said. “But considering how it happened, people handled it well.”
With Rodgers shelved for the rest of the season with a torn Achilles tendon, it would seem customers at Jake’s will have to keep paying their beer tabs for the rest of the season.
