The nerve of these guys.
Oreo’s latest new flavor announcement might sound an awful lot like cultural appropriation to Big Apple ears, but come January, NYC’s treasured, classic bakeries will be competing with — wait for it — Oreo Black & White Cookies.
A staple in local German and then Jewish bakeries for well over a century, famously interpreted as a call to racial harmony on the hit sitcom “Seinfeld,” the actual black and white is a half-moon of angel food cake topped with white fondant and chocolate icing, still consumed as frequently in some quarters as when it made its debut in Yorkville, back in 1902 at the long-gone Glaser’s Bake Shop.
And the packaged Oreo version, soon to be stacked high at price-gouging local supermarkets? Look for a split of chocolate and classic, vanilla-flavored creme, sandwiched between two Golden Oreos.
If that’s not sounding nearly so appetizing as the real thing, fortunately for Gotham-based sweettooths the real deal is still to be found just down the block.
Also in January, according to cookie conglomerate Mondelez, look for new Gluten-Free Golden Oreos — there’s already an original, chocolate version — and a promising, peanut butter-flavored addition to the company’s fledgling Cakester line.
The soft, cream-filled snacks give strong whoopie pie vibes — even if, once again, there’s no substitute for the real thing. For that, you’ll have to go a little bit further than just down the block, to the twin whoopie pie strongholds of Pennsylvania Dutch Country and Maine.
All three flavors will debut Jan. 3 — some only for a limited time.
The announcement follows a year of flavor adventure for the brand — in 2023, fans could munch on Cotton Candy Oreos, Blackout Cake Oreos, and the hard-to-find Red Velvet Oreos. S’moreos also came back for a brief time last spring, modeled on the nostalgic campfire treat.
