Surprising no one, Oppenheimer won Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday night, following a string of Oppenheimer wins including Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy. The award was announced by Al Pacino, in a somewhat awkward manner, who neglected to read out the other nominees before opening the envelope. Oh, Al!
Director Christopher Nolan, who had already given one acceptance speech for his win for Best Director, didn’t speak again, and instead let his fellow producers have their moment in the spotlight.
Oppenheimer producer Emma Thomas spoke first, saying “I could deny it, but I have been dreaming about this moment for so long. But it seemed so unlikely that it would ever happen.”
Producer Charles Roven spoke next, reflecting on his long and fruitful career with Thomas and Nolan. All in all, it was a nice, if expected, win for the Oppenheimer team.
Oppenheimer—the harrowing biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man who is credited with inventing the atom bomb—had long been the favorite to win Best Picture, beating out the nine other nominees: American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest. Nolan’s film had already swept the BAFTAs, the Director’s Guild Awards, and the Producer’s Guild Awards. On top of that, it was the most-nominated film at the Oscars, with a grand total of 13 nominations. So this win didn’t come as a surprise!
And that’s a wrap on the 2024 Oscar season! Now, who’s ready to leave those stuffy Oscar movies behind and dive into summer movie season? Bring on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire!
