Omar Narvaez provided the Mets with a steady backup catching presence last season, and he has decided to continue with the club.
On Thursday, the veteran catcher exercised his player option for next season worth $7 million.
Narvaez began last season in a job share with Tomas Nido, but a calf strain sent Narvaez to the injured list a week into the season.
In Narvaez’s absence — which lasted into early June — rookie Francisco Alvarez emerged as the primary catcher.
Narvaez, 31, appeared in 49 games for the Mets and owned a .211/.283/.297 slash line with two homers and seven RBIs.
Narvaez arrived last winter as a free agent on a one-year deal that contained the player option for next season.
The Mets’ new president of baseball operations, David Stearns, traded for Narvaez while heading the Brewers’ front office before the 2020 season.
