Last month’s tragic death of world champion sprinter Tori Bowie took an even more tragic turn on Monday, when multiple reports indicated she died from complications of childbirth. 

Bowie was found dead in her Winter Garden, Florida home on May 2 when Orange County Sheriff’s deputies were conducting a welfare check.

The autopsy report said that she had been roughly 8 months pregnant and was “undergoing labor” when she died, according to TMZ. 

The report also stated, per USA Today, that there was a “well-developed fetus” and possible complications Bowie had been dealing with were respiratory distress and eclampsia.

The latter is seizures that can occur for pregnant people with symptoms such as high blood pressure, headaches, blurry vision and convulsions, according to Cleveland Clinic. 

Family and friends had grown increasingly concerned after not hearing from Bowie for several days, which prompted the welfare check.

Sheriff’s deputies discovered her in bed and the medical examiner had ruled she died of natural causes. 

Bowie’s untimely passing came as a shock to the track and field community.

Bowie, 32, had won three medals during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro which included the gold as a member of the US 4×100 women’s relay team. 

She became the world’s fastest woman in 2017 when she won the 100-meter dash at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London. 

At the time of her passing, her representative Icon Management Inc. wrote on Twitter: “We’ve lost a client, dear friend, daughter and sister. Tori was a champion…a beacon of light that shined so bright! We’re truly heartbroken and our prayers are with the family and friends.”

Some of the sports’ biggest stars took to social media as well to express their condolences, including Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Noah Lyles, and Sha’Carri Richardson. 

“My heart breaks for the family of Tori Bowie,” Fraser-Pryce wrote in a tweet. “A great competitor and source of light. Your energy and smile will always be with me. Rest in peace.”
