A blowout and an embarrassing loss will do it at Oklahoma State.

In his 21st season guiding the program, Mike Gundy was relieved of his duties Tuesday after starting the season with a disappointing 1-2 start to the season following last year’s 3-9 mark.

The Cowboys have lost 11 of their last 12 games dating back to last season.

“This is a decision about what’s best for our football program, our student-athletes, and Oklahoma State University, and it reflects our unwavering commitment to championship-level football and competing for national success,” Oklahoma State president Jim Hess said in a statement.

“Coach Gundy dedicated decades of his life to OSU, achieving significant success and positively impacting hundreds of young men who wore the OSU uniform. His contributions to our university, both as a player and coach, deserve our profound respect and will not be forgotten. We are grateful for his service and wish him and his family the very best.”

Offensive coordinator Doug Meacham, who previously served as the offensive coordinator at TCU, Houston and Kansas, will take over as the team’s interim coach.

Meacham played along the offensive line for Oklahoma State from 1983-87.

This firing comes while the program is at its low point in Gundy’s tenure.

After losing nine straight to close out the 2024 season, Oklahoma State was smashed by Oregon, 69-3, on Sept. 6, and lost at home to Tulsa on Friday as 12-point favorites.

The Cowboys’ lone win was against UT Martin, 27-7, a game in which they were favored by 26.5 points.

In firing Gundy, the program is moving on from its all-time wins leader who provided one of the more memorable college football quotes of the past few decades.

You may remember Gundy from a memorable crashout in 2007 when he made a quarterback change and angrily yelled at reporters for writing a story about it.

“Come after me. I’m a man. I’m 40,” Gundy said in the rage-filled press conference.

“I’m not a kid. Write something about me or our coaches. Don’t write about a kid that does everything right, who’s heart is broken.”

Gundy, 58, ends his career at Oklahoma State with a 170–90 record with 12 bowl victories and a Big 12 championship in 2011.
