The mother of Ohio State wideout Carnell Tate has been killed in a drive-by shooting in Chicago.
Ashley Griggs, 40, was one of five people who were shot in the drive-by shortly after 2 a.m. local time in the West Garfield Park neighborhood early Sunday morning.
Tate is entering his freshman season at Ohio State.
“We can confirm this was Carnell’s mother,” the university said in a statement.
“Our coach and coaches are aware of this terrible tragedy, incredibly saddened and they, along with our players, will support Carnell in any way they can during this most difficult time.
Tate played at Marist High School in Chicago before transferring to IMG Academy in Florida for his junior and senior seasons.
He is the third-ranked wide receiver in 247’s 2023 recruiting class.
Tate enrolled at Ohio State this past January.
Four other people — one woman, and three men — were wounded in the drive-by shooting.
Police responded to the shooting on the 4000-block of West Washington Street, according to ABC7 in Chicago.
Griggs was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital and was pronounced dead.
The Harrison police district, where the shooting occurred, has had a 30 percent uptick in murders compared to last year, according to NBC Chicago.
The outlet said Griggs’ tweets were “almost exclusively” about her son’s football accomplishments.
“The wait is finally over,” she tweeted when her son’s No. 17 jersey for Ohio State was unveiled.
“On behalf of our entire family we will not be commenting at this time,” Griggs’ mother, Angelina Griggs, said in a statement.
“There is an active and ongoing investigation into Ashley’s murder, and until that investigation is concluded, we will not be commenting. Thank you.”
