NextImg:Oddsmakers: Georgia would be favorite vs. Michigan in college football championship

The college football national championship game between Washington and Michigan will take place Monday evening, but in the eyes of Las Vegas oddsmakers, the best team in the country will be watching from home.

USA Today’s Ben Fawkes asked several sportsbook operators how the Georgia Bulldogs — the winner of the last two titles — would be valued in a hypothetical matchup against the Wolverines, who are currently favored by 4.5 points over the Huskies.

“My power ratings would have Georgia -1 over Michigan,” Chris Andrews, sportsbook director at the South Point Hotel & Casino, told Fawkes.

And he wasn’t alone.

“I would have Georgia -2,” Zachary Lucas, head of retail sportsbook operations at TwinSpires said, per Fawkes. “Power rating-wise they’re higher and Georgia’s offense is better than Michigan’s by a wide margin.”

Two more oddsmakers told Fawkes that Georgia would be favored.

A fifth said he would open it as a pick-em.

Georgia, which came into the season looking for its third straight national title, spent the first 14 weeks of the season at the top of the AP rankings.

Their hopes for another national championship ended with a loss to Alabama in the SEC championship game, which effectively eliminated them from the playoff.

Last week, though, the Bulldogs sent a message to the selection committee with a beatdown of undefeated No. 7 Florida State — which had a strong case to make the playoff — in the Orange Bowl.

Georgia beat the Seminoles, who were missing many players due to opt-outs and transfers, 63-3, the biggest win in a bowl game in college football history.

Alabama, meanwhile, fell to top-ranked Michigan, 27-20.

The Huskies, who were 3.5-point underdogs against Texas, beat the Longhorns 37-31 to make the final.
