The NYPD has kicked off an internal investigation after an officer was recorded punching a man and another was seen kneeling on his neck after police said he choked a sergeant during a violent scuffle in the Bronx last weekend.

The fracas involving several officers and suspect Romaine Francis began after he approached the cops “in an aggressive manner” around 10:30 p.m. Sunday night at the corner of Prospect Avenue and East 149th Street, according to a police spokesperson.

The officers had been conducting an investigation when the “uninvolved” 29-year-old man confronted them, police said.

Officers at the scene asked Francis to back away “multiple times,” before they tried to take him into custody, police said. A physical altercation then erupted, according to video of the incident shared on social media.

Police said that during the struggle, Francis “placed his hands around a sergeant’s neck and choked her.”

The footage begins with Francis standing inches away from an officer before the two bump chests. A shoving match ensues as the officer pushes the man towards the street as other cops join in to help, the video shows.

Suddenly, the female sergeant rushes in from the side and tries to grab Francis by the neck and pull him to the ground while his arms are still locked with the other officer, according to the clip.

As she pulls him away, another officer jumps in and starts throwing punches at Francis’ head.

“Stop beating on him!” one bystander yells in the video.

The officers then force Francis to the ground. In the clip, what sounds like a discharged taser can be heard.

While Francis is lying on the ground, the female officer puts her knee on the back of his neck while two other officers hold him down, video shows.

“Give us your hands!” she yells at the man as the clip cuts out.

Francis was charged with assault on a police officer, strangulation, criminal obstruction of breathing, assault, harassment, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration.
