NextImg:NYC weighs new 30-day shelter stay for single migrants — and may give families 60-day deadline

Single migrants would be kicked out of New York City shelters within 30 days — half the current allowed stay — under proposed new rules being floated by the Adams administration, sources told The Post on Tuesday.

Migrant families also would be limited to 60-day stays, as opposed to their current unlimited amount, under the plan, according to the outlet The City.

City Hall has informally “floated” the plan in an ongoing effort to free up space in the Big Apple’s overwhelmed shelters and discourage new arrivals from coming, according to the local government sources.

City Councilwoman Diana Alaya (D-Manhattan/The Bronx) confirmed she was told by insiders that Adams is planning to cut the 60-day rule in half.

“We have to call a spade a spade,” Alaya told The Post. “This is a very transparent way to disincentive the use of our shelter system as a means of housing. They’re — the administration — they’re sending the message to migrants, ‘Do not come here.’

“I think this is against the very fabric of what New York is built on, and it’s painful to watch,” she said.

It is not clear when such a move might be implemented, but the original 60-day notices issued in July will start expiring this weekend.

City Hall is considering implementing a 30-day notice for single migrants staying in New York City shelters, according to sources.

City Hall did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.

City officials began issuing two-month notices to adult migrants to leave to reserve “urgently needed space for families with children” and push asylum seekers to find alternative housing.

Those who haven’t found a place of their own at the end of 60 days can ask shelter officials for help applying to other housing options, including hotels in upstate New York.

Shelters have been overwhelmed by the sheer amount of migrants consistently pouring into the Big Apple in search of refuge. Last month, dozens of migrants were forced to sleep on the sidewalk outside Manhattan’s iconic Roosevelt Hotel after the hotel-turned-shelter and intake center hit capacity.

About 110,000 migrants have come to New York City and sought shelter since the spring of 2022.

Adams has repeatedly begged the federal government to assist in feeding, clothing and housing the migrants — but was snubbed by President Biden on Tuesday when the commander in chief failed to set up a meeting with the mayor while in town for the United Nations General Assembly.

“New York doesn’t deserve this, the asylum seekers don’t deserve this,” Hizzoner said.
