A Brooklyn teen died in an apparent drowning Tuesday afternoon after he jumped off the ledge of an upstate New York waterfall, authorities said.
The 16-year-old and another friend from the Big Apple landed in a swimming hole below Fawn’s Leap — a popular waterfall in the Catskill Mountains — but struggled when they got caught in a hydraulic current, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office said in a Wednesday news release.
Other buddies yelled from the top of the ledge as they spotted the two in trouble while another swimmer already in the water raced toward them, the sheriff’s office said.
The swimmer helped one of the boys, but couldn’t rescue the 16-year-old.
The boy’s body was eventually recovered by divers from the sheriff’s department, state police and the Athens Fire Department.
He was pronounced dead at the scene around 3:30 p.m. His identity has not been revealed.
The investigation into the tragic death is ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office.
Fawn’s Leap has become a popular destination for thrill seekers to jump into from cliffs that are about 25 feet high. It’s not uncommon for people to post videos of themselves online jumping into the water below.
The death comes after two rope rescue teams had to go down one of the cliffs to pull an injured adventurer on the bank of the swimming hole late last month, the Times Union reported.
And the day after, 16 people had to be rescued from the Fawn’s Leap and nearby Rat’s Hole on the Kaaterskill Creek after a downpour flooded the area, the newspaper reported.
