The two young children left badly battered by an unhinged hammer-swinging housemate who fatally bludgeoned their mother are expected to be released from the hospital soon, according to a hopeful Thanksgiving Day update on the family’s GoFundMe page.
Zhou Zhou, 43, was beaten to death in the horror August attack and her helpless children, Sophia, 3, and David, 5, were left fighting for their lives.
Liyong Ye, 47, attacked them inside their Sunset Park apartment, authorities said. Ye and his 9-year-old son also lived in the small, three-bedroom apartment alongside the family, police said.
Exactly three months later, a post on a fundraising page for the stricken family revealed that they received some heartening news.
“Happy Thanksgiving! Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday. We’re thrilled to share that Sophia and David successfully underwent their surgeries on the 16th at Bellevue Hospital,” the post said. “Their recovery is progressing well, and we anticipate their discharge next week.”
The impending hospital release is a major turnaround in the conditions of the siblings – who just days after the sickening attack were described as “likely to die” by Assistant District Attorney Tziyonah Langsam.
They’d suffered “blunt trauma to their heads,” Langsam said.
Still, the organizers of the page, the non-profit Parent Child Relationship Association, said that financial support is needed “as the Liu family seeks a stable place to stay post-discharge.”
“In the event a permanent residence isn’t secured immediately, temporary arrangements will be made for them to have a stable foundation,” the post said.
“We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support you’ve shown throughout this challenging period. Your generosity has made a significant impact on Sophia and David’s lives.”
After the heinous attack, Zhou and her children were rushed to NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn, where the mom-of-two was pronounced dead due to massive head trauma.
Harrowing footage viewed by The Post at the time showed cops carrying the bloodied kids out of the 52nd Street apartment, near Fifth Avenue.
Neighbors said the children were “covered from head to toe, everything was blood.”
Ye — who is charged with murder and attempted murder — occupied one of the bedrooms in the family’s apartment with his 9-year-old son. The slain woman and her family lived in another room and the third was being rented by a single tenant.
The accused killer repeatedly complained about the state of the kitchen and bathroom to the third roommate in the weeks leading up to the brutal attack, according to officials.
Prosecutors say Ye called the third roommate and asked if they could pick up his son so he could carry out his demented scheme.
The unidentified roommate told police they returned home to find a bloodied Ye standing over the three victims with a hammer in his hand.
Blood spatter covered the floors and walls of the kitchen that Ye had previously complained was not up to acceptable living standards.
The witness called 911 and Ye was arrested after cops caught him trying to leave the apartment building.
The bloody weapon was recovered during a search of the unit.
“The incident I’m about to describe to you is a horrific and senseless act of violence which took the life of a married mother of two,” NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell told reporters in the aftermath of the attack. “I think I can speak for all New Yorkers when I say our community, all our prayers are with this family at this time.”
