NextImg:NYC congestion pricing delayed to leave room for Thanksgiving parade balloons: report

Congestion pricing in New York is going to have to wait — and the reason is full of hot air.

The controversial program to charge drivers to enter parts of Manhattan has been put on hold until after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade — so that the tolling system’s sensors won’t block the way as Snoopy, Spongebob and Santa Clause make their way down the street, the West Side Rag reported.

The infrastructure that is slated for Central Park West and 60th Street now won’t be erected until after Nov. 23 because of the clearance problem for the parade’s iconic balloons and floats.

It wasn’t immediately clear when the infrastructure would go up along Central Park West — a main stretch of the Thanksgiving Day Parade’s 2.5 mile route.

Despite this year’s delay, the infrastructure will have to be taken down — and then reinstalled — after each parade going forward.

“The parade-day treatment for central business district tolling equipment in future years would be no different than other street infrastructure that’s removed as the parade starts and replaced as the parade ends, like traffic lights,” an MTA spokesperson told the paper.

“The city already undertakes similar parade preparations, overseeing the removal and reinstallation of streetscape items like streetlights, signage, and street furniture to facilitate parade operations.”

The cost of removing the infrastructure and scanners to make way for Snoopy and the other iconic balloons each year wasn’t immediately known.

The figure is already included in the MTA’s $507 million contract is signed with TransCore in 2019 to operate the congestion pricing infrastructure, the MTA spokesperson added.

Some scanners and congestion pricing infrastructure are already in place along 60th Street.

While it’s not yet clear when drivers coming into Manhattan below 60th will be hit with the congestion toll, MTA chairman Janno Lieber has said it is on track to begin next spring.

The cost of the congestion toll also hasn’t been determined but the transit authority has signaled it will range between $9 and $23 per day.

Under the plan, the MTA is weighing major discounts for drivers who come in overnight, as well as lower income commuters who don’t have easy access to frequent transit services.

The discounts of $4 to $7 would be discounted against the base congestion charge, officials said during a toll board earlier this month.
