A Flatiron District attorney who plied his girlfriend with pricey gifts is suing her over the luxe presents now that their romance has soured.
Stephen Bilkis, 60, popped the question to Judi Livigni, 54, in December 2021 but the couple’s romance did not have a fairytale ending.
Bilkis claims he lavished Livigni with $37,000 worth of presents, including an 18-carat Maria Gaspari diamond and white gold watch; an 18-carat yellow gold necklace with 30 diamonds; two bags and a belt from Louis Vuitton; a Balmain leather skirt, which can cost anywhere from $1,200 to more than $2,000; along with $5,000 cash and a $1,000 airline travel credit.
The gifts were given “solely in contemplation of the marriage,” according to Bilkis’ Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit.
But Livigni, a nutritionist, never said yes, her lawyer contended.
“The gifts were not given in contemplation of marriage. They were dating,” said Faith Getz Rousso.
Most of the items were birthday or holiday gifts, Rousso said.
Bilkis claimed Livigni ignored his repeated requests to return the items but Rousso said Livigni did reply, pointing out the gifts weren’t given as part of a marriage proposal and offering to return one of the bags which had belonged to Bilkis’ mother.
“The only thing under New York law that he’s entitled to have returned is the engagement ring,” she said. “Under New York law, a gift is a gift. This is frivolous. He’s opening himself up to sanctions as an attorney, and as an attorney, he should know better.”
The lawsuit, which seeks $37,000 damages, doesn’t mention an engagement ring.
“She tried on a ring, she said I’ll consider it, and gave it right back to him,” Rousso said.
An attorney for Bilkis claimed “There are many other expensive luxury gifts that were given to Ms. Livigni during the relationship prior to the engagement for which return is not sought.
“The only gifts we seek to recover were given in contemplation of marriage, post engagement. In fact, two were purchased in celebration at the time of the engagement ring sizing,” lawyer Scott Steinberg insisted in a statement.
