A Queens lawmaker has introduced legislation to spread the burden of dealing with the migrant crisis across New York State, as the Big Apple continues to struggle to handle the influx of asylum seekers.

In one of the bills put forward by Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar in Albany Thursday, local governments would be barred from blocking asylum seekers from being housed in their counties through emergency orders.

The state lawmaker, who is an ally of Mayor Eric Adams, also proposed creating a statewide coordinator for migrants to oversee the intake and care of the asylum seekers once they reach the state.

“It is time for New York State to lead a Statewide response as New York City faces one of the greatest humanitarian crises in its history,” Rajkumar said.

“The State must enlist all its counties to help New York City shelter migrants, because the strength of our entire State depends on New York City continuing to be a strong economic engine.”

More than 110,000 asylum seekers have come to New York City since the start of the crisis in the spring 2022 with the city expected to spend at least $12 billion over the next two years to care for the migrants.

Currently, there are nearly 60,000 migrants in the city’s care.

Adams has issued numerous pleas from the state and feds to help deal with the thousands of people from the southern border arriving each week with little to no assistance.

On Wednesday night, he issued his most dire warning, saying the mess will “destroy” NYC.

“I’m gonna tell you something, New Yorkers, never in my life have I had a problem that I didn’t see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this,” Adams said at a town hall on the Upper West Side Wednesday night.

“This issue will destroy New York City. Destroy New York City,” he continued.

Rajkumar appeared with Adams last week during his latest call for the feds to fast-track work authorizations for asylum seekers.
