Tom Brady was at the center of Novak Djokovic’s French Open title celebration Sunday, embracing the tennis star as he approached his box — where Brady was sitting alongside Djokovic’s wife, Jelena — following the match.
Djokovic defeated Casper Ruud in straight sets Sunday 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, 7-5 to win his third title at Roland Garros and snap a tie with Rafael Nadal for most men’s Grand Slam titles, claiming his 23rd.
Brady was one of Djokovic’s invited guests, and during his speech on the court following the match, the former NFL quarterback — who retired in February following 20 seasons with the Patriots and three with the Buccaneers — was recognized again.
“Last but not least, I want to thank football stars for being here,” Djokovic said, referring to both football and soccer. “[Olivier] Giroud, [Zlatan Ibrahimović], [Kylian] Mbappe, Tom Brady — I want to thank everybody for coming out and supporting. I hope you guys enjoyed.”
Djokovic lost just two sets throughout the entire tournament — once in the quarterfinals against Karen Khachanov, another in the semifinals against Carlos Alcaraz — and also defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic, Marton Fucsovics, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Juan Pablo Varillas en route to the championship.
During his second championship point, Djokovic served and combined with Ruud to hit more than a dozen exchanges before Djokovic hit a final shot toward the corner, Ruud couldn’t land the return and the 36-year-old star fell to the clay court in celebration.
Then, Djokovic wore a jacket with a printed “23” to reflect the new men’s Grand Slam record.
“A Grand Slam is a Grand Slam — four biggest tournaments that we have in the history of our sport, tennis,” Djokovic said following the match. “Every single player dreams of being on this stage and winning the trophy at least once in their career. I am beyond fortunate in my life to win, 23 times, Grand Slams. It’s an incredible, incredible feeling.”
