This mom is taking do-it-yourself projects to a whole new level.
In August 2022, then-Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman was diagnosed with Paget-Schroetter syndrome and had to undergo a procedure to get rid of blood clots, which involved removing the rib closest to his collarbone to prevent any further blood clotting.
Nearly a year later, Hartman is now a sixth-year senior who transferred to Notre Dame to play quarterback, and that one removed rib will still be in his life — just outside of his body.
Lisa Hartman, the mother of Sam, currently possesses the removed rib, keeping it in the Hartman household’s refrigerator, and she’s currently in the process of converting it from just a bone into a necklace for the quarterback according to ESPN’s David Hale.
“It’s to get rid of the flesh that was on the rib,” Lisa told The Athletic on Thursday. “He means the world to me, so if he wants me to clean the flesh off of his ribs, then that’s what I’m gonna do.”
The necklace is expected to be ready within a few weeks time, so there is little doubt that Lisa — or someone — will be rocking the bone-turned-necklace when Sam suits up in the blue and gold for the Fighting Irish against Navy on Aug. 26 in Dublin, Ireland.
Hartman put up some of the best numbers of his collegiate career without the bone last year with Wake Forest, throwing for 3,700 yards, 38 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions.
That play helped lead the Demon Deacons to an 8-5 record, ranking as high as No. 10 in the AP Top 25 poll during the season, and earned them a trip to the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl against Missouri.
Hartman both guided Wake Forest to a victory and won the bowl game’s MVP award.
Hartman once called Lisa “the coolest mom in the world” in a 2020 Instagram post.
If being the coolest mom in the world means refrigerating your son’s rib to be converted into a necklace, then she would win the award in a landslide.
