Nonbinary student Nex Benedict died by suicide a day after the teen got into a fight with other students inside an Oklahoma high school bathroom, the state medical examiner revealed Wednesday.

The 16-year-old died from an overdose, officials determined — with toxic levels of two drugs found in their system.

The death of Benedict, who used they/them pronouns, gained national attention following a Feb. 7 brawl between the teen and girls in a bathroom that sent Benedict to the hospital.

“From the beginning of this investigation, Owasso Police observed many indications that this death was the result of suicide,” Owasso Police Department Lt. Nick Boatman said in a statement.

“However, investigators did not wish to confirm that information without the final results being presented by the Oklahoma Medical Examiners Office.”
