A New Jersey school bus driver was fired after he stopped at his home with a bus full of students on earlier this week.

The Freehold Regional High School District barred the employee after he picked up students from Howell High School and made a stop at his residence, leaving them unattended while he went inside, according to NJ.com.

The driver — who is contracted by Jay’s Bus Service — went home after realizing he left his drop-off roster there, according to Rebecca Policastro, a coordinator for the school district.

The district, which operates six high schools including Howell, reported the incident to the state.

An unknown number of students were left on the bus unattended for about three minutes, she added.

The district — which filed a Report of Students Left Unattended with the state — said it was made aware of the incident after the students were already being dropped off at their homes.

The driver’s name and current employment status are being withheld at this time.

Jay’s Bus Service, which is based in Lakewood, provides services to more than 150 schools in Monmouth and Ocean counties. It could not be reached for comment on Thursday, according to the outlet.

A portion of the company’s website devoted to safety states that it is “committed to transporting the tens of thousands of students that depend on us daily to get to and back from school safely.”

It also assures all its drivers “receive full training to ensure they are up to our safety standards.”
