NextImg:Nick Chubb injury has Browns eyeing Kareem Hunt as potential replacement

The Browns might go back to a familiar face to replace the injured Nick Chubb.

Kareem Hunt is visiting with the Browns on Tuesday after Chubb suffered ligament damage from a gruesome knee injury during Monday night’s loss to the Steelers, according to NFL Network.

Hunt, 28, started his career with the Chiefs before joining the Browns, playing in Cleveland until the end of last season.

Used mostly in a secondary role, Hunt racked up 1,874 rushing yards with 132 receptions for 973 yards over four seasons with the Browns.

Hunt became a free agent this spring, and the team did not sign him, likely because they felt his speed was not what it once was, Cleveland.com reported.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters that the team is likely going to use Jerome Ford, who’s totaled 142 yards on the ground this year, as the team’s primary running back in the interim.

“So everybody’s got to do a little bit more, a little bit more everywhere,” he said, according to NFL.com. “But we’ll look at options there in terms of who we bring in.”

Another player on the Browns’ radar to fill the Chubb void is Rams running back Cam Akers, per Cleveland.com.

Akers, a healthy scratch in Los Angeles’ Week 2 loss to the rival 49ers, is likely on his way out the door as the team is exploring options to trade the 24-year-old, Rams head coach Sean McVay said Monday.

“[General manager] Les [Snead] has talked to a handful of teams and worked with [Akers’ agent] David Mulugheta and seeing if there is some interest for him out there,” McVay said. “That’s the direction we’re headed.”

Akers rushed for 29 yards on 22 carries and scored once in the Rams’ Week 1 win over the Seahawks, but said on X, formerly Twitter, that he was “confused” when he did not suit up against San Francisco.

While it’s not clear exactly why the Rams are looking to trade the 2020 second-round pick but McVay said to the team has been clear with its intentions.

“I feel very good about the clarity that was provided to both he and David Mulugheta in terms of why we’re at where we are,” McVay said. “You don’t want to go back and forth on some of the things that have occurred.”

For whoever ends up replacing Chubb, whose injury was so brutal ESPN decided against airing replays of it, they will have big shoes to fill as the running back had produced four consecutive 1,000-plus yard rushing seasons.

The Browns will next play the Titans on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Cleveland.
