One “inappropriate comment” is going to cost a Phillies star at least one game.
Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson said outfielder Nick Castellanos will not be in Tuesday’s lineup against the Marlins after something he said to the skipper while being removed for a defensive replacement late in a 5-2 win.
“I understand the decision,” Castellanos told reporters. “It was when I got taken out. I wasn’t happy about it. I spoke my mind. [Thomson] said that I crossed a line, so my punishment is that I’m not playing.”
Castellanos, who had played 236 straight games, will see this streak come to an end.
Max Kepler will patrol right field in place of Castellanos.
Thomson did not go into specifics of what was said, but did emphasize that Castellanos is passionate about playing the game.

“One of the many things about Nick that I love is that he’s very emotional,” Thomson told reporters before Tuesday’s game. “He loves to play and he loves to play every inning of every game. I just thought last night, he made an inappropriate comment after he came out. And so today he’s not in the lineup and I’m gonna leave it at that.”
Castellanos, a two-time All-Star, is hitting .278/.321/.425 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs this season.
Never known for a strong glove, Castellanos has been brutal in the outfield, at least according to Statcast’s advanced metrics, which place him in the 1st percentile in outs above average and in the 5th percentile in arm value.
Philadelphia sits just two games behind the Mets in the NL East entering play Tuesday.
