The NHL won’t be replicating the NBA’s in-season tournament.
At least not right now.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told ESPN on Tuesday that they won’t be following their winter sports rival’s lead this time around after the NBA added the tournament for the upcoming season.
“No consideration being given to in-season tournaments,” Daly told the “Worldwide Leader” in an email.
The NBA announced earlier this month that it would introduce an in-season tournament next season involving all 30 teams in the league.
The group stage will begin Nov. 30 and the tournament will run until Dec. 9, with the winner being given the NBA Cup and players receiving additional financial compensation.
All tournament games, except the championship game, will count toward the standings.
NHL Players’ Association executive director Marty Walsh told ESPN that a discussion about an in-season tournament hasn’t taken place among the players.
However, Walsh, who took over as the head of the players’ union in February after a stint as President Joe Biden’s Secretary of Labor, told the outlet that he was open to the idea.
“I think it’s worth looking at anything that’s out there,” Walsh said. “I tell players all the time, even if you have an idea that you think is kind of off-the-wall a little bit, just run it by me.
“You never know what turns into a brilliant idea.”
The more pressing matter for NHL players, according to Walsh, is what international hockey possibilities lay ahead for them.
Players are eying when the NHL can organize another World Cup of Hockey and a return to the Winter Olympics in 2026.
An attempt to host a World Cup of Hockey in 2024 had to be iced after the NHL and NHLPA agreed last November that it was “not feasible” to host a tournament next year.
NHL players have not participated in the Olympics since 2014, and the issue has long been an important one for them as they look to return to representing their country in 2026.
