The Lions and Titans got an unexpected break.
The NFL announced Friday that Detroit wideout Jameson Williams and Tennessee offensive tackle Nick Petit-Frere will be reinstated on Monday after the league adapted its gambling policy.
The two had previously been suspended for six games each as the NFL had prohibited betting on other sports while at team facilities, a rule that also includes hotels on road trips.
Williams was a first-round pick out of Alabama in the 2022 NFL Draft and has blazing speed.
Petit-Frere was a third-round pick out of Ohio State last year and started 16 out of the Titans’ 17 games last season.
The league’s new rules state that betting on the NFL is an indefinite suspension with a minimum of one year, and two if the player’s team is involved.
There is also a minimum one-year suspension for passing along inside information or betting through a proxy.
Actual or attempted game fixing is lifetime banishment.
As far as the infractions that ensnared Williams and Petit-Frere, the first violation of betting on other sports at the workplace or while working is a two-game suspension, six games for the second violation and at least a year for the third.
“Among the facts that the Commissioner will consider are the specific pattern and history of the wagers, the player’s access to confidential information or ability to affect a game in any way, whether the player has previously violated the Policy, similar misconduct before joining the NFL, failure to attend or complete mandatory training on this Policy, and retaliation,” the NFL said.
“Possible mitigating factors include self-reporting, and prompt acceptance of responsibility and cooperation with any League investigation.”
