The NFL has handed down its discipline to Panthers owner David Tepper after a stunning video showed him throwing his drink at a Jaguars fan from his suite at their game in Jacksonville on Sunday.
Tepper was fined $300,000 for the incident, the NFL announced Tuesday.
The 66-year-old expressed contrition after the league’s announcement.
“I am deeply passionate about this team and regret my behavior on Sunday,” Tepper said in a statement.
“I should have let NFL stadium security handle any issues that arose. I respect the NFL’s code of conduct and accept the League’s discipline for my behavior.”
The league issued a statement to NFL Media reporter Tom Pelissero that said, “All NFL personnel are expected to conduct themselves at all times in ways that respect our fans and favorably reflect on their team and the NFL.”
Tepper, a New York hedge fund titan, purchased the Panthers for $2.2 billion in 2018 from Jerry Richardson.
The team has had a rough go of it during his tenure, and this season, Frank Reich became the second straight Panthers head coach to be fired in the middle of the season after it also happened to Matt Rhule last year.
On Sunday, the Panthers got blanked, 26-0, by a Jaguars team that was starting backup quarterback C.J. Beathard in place of injured starter Trevor Lawrence.
The Panthers are 2-14 this season and have already clinched the worst record in the league, but they traded their first-round selection to the Bears last offseason to move up to first overall and select Bryce Young in 2023, meaning Chicago will have the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Young has not looked pro-ready this season, and it will be up to whoever is hired to permanently replace Reich to try to salvage the situation.
