The Giants could be forced to hand a primetime home game over to the Jets.
The NFL is considering swapping the two Week 14 games at MetLife Stadium, moving Giants-Packers out of “Monday Night Football” on Dec. 11 and into the prior day’s 1 p.m. television window.
In that scenario, the Jets-Texans game is the only option that could be flexed into primetime because otherwise the Jets and Giants would have conflicting Sunday home games.
The Texans (6-4) are led by Offensive Rookie of the Year favorite and darkhorse MVP candidate C.J. Stroud at quarterback.
The Jets just made a quarterback change to Tim Boyle and it is unlikely that Aaron Rodgers would be back from his torn Achilles by then (if at all).
“I’m not sure we’d do it,” NFL vice president of broadcasting Mike North said on the SI Media Podcast. “But the Texans have played their way into national television. We’re looking for an opportunity.”
The NFL has until Nov. 29 to make that decision, so a lot could depend on whether the Jets (4-6) remain in the playoff hunt by beating the Dolphins on Friday.
This is the first year that Monday and Thursday night games can be flexed under NFL rules.
Giants owner John Mara was the loudest opponent prior to the league vote approving expanded flex scheduling because he thought it was unfair to fans who make plans to attend games long in advance.
Now Mara’s team could be the first team impacted.
“That decision is still to be made,” North said, citing how wins by the Giants (3-8) and Packers (4-6) in Week 11 decreased the likelihood compared to one week ago.
