Roger Goodell is nearing his fourth extension as NFL commissioner.

Colts owner Jim Irsay confirmed that the NFL and Goodell are closing in on a deal to extend the commissioner’s contract through March 2027, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

The news came out of the NFL spring meeting, taking place this week in Minneapolis.

ESPN previously reported Goodell and NFL owners were expected to finalize a multi-year contract extension for the commissioner at the owners meetings in Phoenix in March.

Goodell’s extension reportedly has been in the works since last season, when the compensation committee was granted permission by the full membership to get an extension done.

The New York Times reported that Goodell’s total annual compensation was nearly $64 million as recently as the 2020-21 fiscal year.

The 64-year-old, Goodell — who took over for Paul Tagliabue on Sept. 1, 2006 — was previously extended in 2009, 2012 and 2017.

Since his last extension in 2017, Goodell has helped finalize a collective bargaining agreement (in March 2021) that includes $110 billion media rights deals with CBS, NBC, Fox, ESPN and Amazon.

In April, the NFL secured a multi-billion dollar streaming deal with YouTube TV for its Sunday Ticket package of games.

Goodell also addressed Irsay’s comments that his job may be split after he retires, with the possibility of there being a football commissioner and CEO for business matters.

“It is something that has come up. … It’s a healthy discussion to have,” Goodell said, per Breer.

The news about Goodell’s extension came after NFL owners approved flex scheduling for “Thursday Night Football” on Amazon Prime on Monday.
