Love it or hate it, Max’s sex-and-celebrity-filled series The Idol is poised to be the show of the summer. But that’s not the only game in town this weekend if we’re talking about new shows and movies that are coming in hot this weekend.
Not sure which new releases to check out? Let us here at Decider help you figure out what to watch this weekend and where to stream it.
After months of rumors and speculation, Sam Levinson’s new Max series The Idol is finally here. You can catch the first episode of the season when it airs this Sunday. Over on Paramount+, the iCarly reboot is back with all new episodes starring Miranda Cosgrove as the former internet celeb Carly Shay as she navigates life and love with Freddie (Nathan Kress) this season. And on Netflix, the based-on-a-true-story drama The Days reenacts the dramatic days after the catastrophic nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan in 2011.
The Idol is one of the most-hyped shows of the summer, mostly due to all the bad press it has received over the past year. From allegations that the show went from being a satire of the entertainment industry to “torture porn” to its critical panning in the press, the show has piqued everyone’s curiosity for all the wrong reasons. The series stars Lily-Rose Depp as a pop star named Jocelyn who suffers a breakdown and later seeks the help of an exploitative manager played by The Weeknd. You can judge the show for yourself after it’s Sunday night premiere.
Similar to the way that HBO’s Chernobyl depicted the excruciating aftermath of the global, catastrophic nuclear event in Ukraine, Netflix’s The Days provides a dramatized look at what occurred in Japan in the days after a breach at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The limited series tells the story of the disaster from the perspective of the employees at the Tokyo Electric Power Company, as well as employees at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant during the eight critical days immediately following the 2011 tsunami that led to a nuclear disaster. All eight episodes are now available to binge.
Will #Creddie (Carly + Freddie, obvs) become a thing this season on iCarly? In the third season of the reboot, Carly (Miranda Cosgrove) has to reconcile with her feelings for her old friend Freddie, despite the fact that he’s with someone else. With all of these emotions threatening to blow up Carly and Freddie’s friendship, the show revisits some of the same themes from the original series, while adding a grown-up twist. The first two episodes of the new season are available to stream now, with new eps dropping weekly after that.
The options above only scratch the surface, so you know that this weekend’s full lineup will have amazing options for what to watch this weekend!
