This week’s new movies on VOD feature stories of real history, as in the new biographical drama Golda, unexplained phenomena, which is covered in the new dark comedy Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose, and teen satire, in Bottoms.
Bottoms stars Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri (from a script Sennott co-wrote with director Emma Seligman) as two virgins who start a fight club at their high school with the intention of getting laid. The comedic cast is stacked: the film co-stars Nicholas Galitzine, Kaia Gerber, SNL‘s Punkie Johnson and NFL star Marshawn Lynch, and it’s a worthy follow-up to Shiva Baby, Sennott and Seligman’s first feature together.
These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now.
Over the course of her career, Helen Mirren has appeared onscreen as everyone from Queen Elizabeth II to Queen Charlotte to Queen Elizabeth I. In Golda, she embodies yet another woman in power, former Israeli head of state Golda Meir. The film takes place during the Yom Kippur War of 1973, as Meir struggles to protect Israel from the threat of war after Egypt launched an attack to retake the Sinai Peninsula. Less a biopic and more a look at one defining moment in Meir’s career, Golda is a history lesson through the eyes of one of Israel’s most memorable leaders.
If there is one fact about my personal relationship with modern cinema, it’s that I will generally watch anything that Simon Pegg is in, whether it’s Shaun of the Dead, one of the Mission Impossible films, or the new British comedy Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose. The title, which is certainly a mouthful, is based on a true story: Once upon a time, there was a Hungarian parapsychologist named Nandor Fodor who was a paranormal phenomena investigator, kinda like a lower-key Lorraine and Ed Warren, who was brought in to investigate the curious case of a family who claimed a talking weasel lived in their barn. Come for Pegg, stay for Neil Gaiman as the voice of Gef, the talking mongoose.
