This week’s new movies on VOD include the controversial new Amy Winehouse biopic Back To Black, the newest film in The Strangers franchise, and the Karen Gillan dramedy Late Bloomers.
In Late Bloomers, Gillan stars as Louise, an aimless 20-something who breaks her hip one night after getting drunk. When an older Polish woman (Margaret Sophie Stein) is hired as her caretaker, she gains a new perspective on life. Jermaine Fowler, Talian Balsam, and Kevin Nealon co-star.
These are just a few of the films that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now.
Back to Black stars Industry actor Marisa Abela as the late singer Amy Winehouse in the story of her rise to fame. Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, the film follows Amy from her years as an aspiring singer to her global success with the 2006 Back to Black album. Reaction to the film thus far has been confused at best and vitriolic at worst, with Decider’s John Serba writing that it falls somewhere between “varnished tribute and icky exploitation.”
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is the first film in a new trilogy within the Strangers franchise. The film stars Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez as a young couple stalked by a trio of masked strangers while they’re staying in a rental house. Chapter 2, which was filmed concurrently with this one, will also star Petsch and is expected out later this year.
